"The world can feel dark and daunting during these unprecedented times. But we must focus on God our light."
Have you ever been afraid of the dark? Did it terrify you? When I was a little girl, I feared the dark. I always thought I was going to see evil spirits. I thought they only came out in the darkness, which kept me fearful at night. I could not go to sleep in the pitch dark. I fed my fear by sleeping with the television light. If I went to the bathroom in the middle of the night, I would wake my sister to go with me.
As I got older, I wasn’t as afraid of the dark, but the dark still robbed me of my freedom by intimidating me. I went to the bathroom in the middle of the night without my sister. But I continued to sleep with the television light. The spirit of fear tormented me when it came to darkness.
After years of torment, I had an epiphany. It wasn’t the dark I was afraid of; I was terrified of the unknown. It did not matter that the house, room, and bed were familiar. The only thing that disrupted my peace was the unknown; I could not see. The familiar became unfamiliar in darkness, with everything going on in the world from COVID-19 numbers slowly rising again to unemployment at an all-time high to racism, and police brutality. We are in a dark, unfamiliar place.
Although, this present time can feel dark, bleak, and daunting. We must know God is in control, and he will take care of his children. We must hold fast to God's word because it is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. God did not promise us that we will always see our way in every situation, but God did tell us to walk by faith and not by sight. No matter how dark it gets, trust God. If you are feeling overwhelmed, depressed, or full of anxiety. Pray! Tell God exactly how you are feeling. Ask God to help you. Meditate on his word. Ask God to deliver you from focusing on the darkness in this world. God wants us to cast all our cares on him because he cares for us.
Do not let the spirit of fear torment you. God is light. God’s word is our comfort. God tells us in 2 Corinthians 1:3,4 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, (4) who comforts us in all our troubles so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.” We must know God will take care of us doing these unfamiliar times. It is time to stop being afraid of the dark and trust God.
